Based on the best-selling novel that caused a great deal of controversy in France, Lila Says is a seductive tale about the sexual awakening that occurs in the late teens. Chimo (Mohommed Khouas) is a 19-year-old aspiring writer who has fallen for the gorgeous Lila. The stunning blonde French girl has just moved in with her creepy aunt, who resides in Chimo's Arab ghetto.

Lila is precocious for her 16 years, and invites Chimo to look up her skirt - provided he can handle it. This challenge sends them off into a game of sexual discovery that blurs the distinction between innocence and danger. At the same time, Mouloud, the leader of a gang, has also become interested in Lila. In the end, the characters are forced to examine issues of tolerance, self-loathing, and even chauvinism of a sort.

Lila says has been nominated for various awards at festivals, including the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Festival. It's developed some positive buzz and should be a decent indie entry into the summer fray. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
