After scoring a $40.13 million opening weekend on its way to a total of $125.31 million at the box office (not to mention over $60 million in rental earnings), it was a virtual certainty that the first Charlie's Angels film would be followed up with a sequel. What was initially less certain was that any of the three Angels from the original would return. After a period of several months, where rumors swirled about who might fill the spandex of the actresses from the first film, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu all agreed to reprise their roles. For Diaz, coming back to play Natalie means a $20 million paycheck, making her only the second actress (after Julia Roberts) to receive that amount for a film.

Among those not returning are Bill Murray and Tom Green, neither of which is particularly surprising, given Murray's rumored tension with Lucy Liu and Green's recent divorce from Barrymore. Taking over the Bosley role (as Son of Bosley) is Jamie Foxx, while Crispin Glover will play the menacing Thin Man again. Director McG and screenwriter John August, who both worked on the original, are also back for the sequel. Look for McG to direct the eventually-upcoming Superman as well.

No plot details have been released at this time, but McG has said in interviews that the action scenes will be more intricate. Additionally, it's a slim possibility that some of the original TV cast members, such as Farrah Fawcett and Kate Jackson, could make cameo appearances. One character from the series who absolutely will "appear" is John Forsythe, who provides the voice of Charlie.

The original 2000 release had a budget of $92 million, and given Diaz's paycheck, it's probably reasonable to expect the sequel to cost more to produce. Barrymore's production company will again be involved, with Sony (Columbia) taking charge of distribution. You gotta give credit where credit is due. The people in Columbia's marketing division have really taken the "Give The People What They Want" philosophy to heart. As we now know from the very effective trailers and tv ads, there will be no shortage of...."production values" in Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle. Cougar Queen Demi Moore and her rumored $750,000 body are looking particularly fetching in all those bikini shots and we're thinking that maybe, juuuuuuuust maybe, we were supposed to be picking up on a some kind of hot lesbian vibe in her scenes with Cameron Diaz. Yeah, we know that sounds shocking, but we swear that you can pick that up if you watch closely. Especially if you pause your Tivo at just the right spot where naughty, naughty Demi looks like she's leaning in kiss.....excuse us, we need a few moments to recuperate.

Moving on. Moore is playing a fallen angel called Madison Lee, who has gotten her hands on the NOC list....errr...."Silver rings containing the identities of everyone in the Federal Witness Protection Program." She's apparently teamed up with Crispin Glover, reprising his Thin Man role from the first series, to kill these squealers, though what motivates them to do so, we don't know or care at this point. Justin Theroux, the hipster director from Mulholland Drive, plays the B-plot villain, an ex-convict former boyfriend of Drew Barrymore who is trying to kill her (Yeah, like there aren't hundreds of those running around LA already.)

Over on the side of the good guys, Bernie Mac has replaced Jamie Foxx as Bosley's son (how long before we see Bernie and Bill Murray in Different Strokes: The Movie?). Luke Wilson and Matt LeBlanc are back to reprise their roles as inoffensive boy toys, while former Terminator/X-File Agent Robert Patrick returns to government service as federal marshall. John Cleese, Jacklyn Smith, Pink and the Olson twins all reportedly show up for cameos. But as always, the real point is to squeeze in as many costume changes and bullet time action sequences as possible for the ADD crowd. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. (Calvin Trager/BOP)
