The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things
Based on the critically acclaimed novel by JT Leroy, The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things marks the English-language directorial debut of Asia Argento, daughter of popular Italian director Dario Argento and female star of xXx. The film has so far played at a number of festivals, where it has received strong critical response.
The story centers around a boy named Jeremiah, a child nobody wants. He is passed around from a foster family to his bitter, angry mother, Sarah. She takes him out on the road, where the pair leads a troubled existence as they travel the country roads of the U.S. On their travels, Sarah acts as a hooker for sugar daddies, works as a stripper, turns tricks for truckers and even does some drug concoction in the cellar of a boyfriend. As time passes, Jeremiah begins to crave Sarah's punishment as a way of remembering that his life is "in balance".
While the subject matter will certainly be difficult for some audience members to take, the film is already being recognized as one of the more important independent projects to hit theaters in 2005. Along with Argento, who portrays Sarah, the cast also includes Peter Fonda, Michael Pitt, Marilyn Manson and Jeremy Renner. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
