This romantic comedy with the unwieldy title follows the story of Frank Keane, trying to make sense of his life after the death of his wife. One day he happens on a car wreck and goes to help the driver, who sadly is already on his way to the River Styx. Before he dies, however, he tells Frank that he was going to the eponymous school he attended as a child for a reunion with his first love, Lisa. He begs Frank to keep the appointment for him and tell Lisa what happened and of his enduring love. For Frank, honoring the dying man’s last request becomes an odyssey of self-discovery and a reawakening of the feelings he thought had died along with his wife, and renews his joie de vivre, as well as opening him up to the possibilities of a new love.

Marilyn Hotchkiss’ Ballroom Dancing & Charm School premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, and it is based on a short film of the same name made by the same writer/director, Randall Miller, 15 years ago. Given the stellar cast and the genre, it should generate a fair amount of interest when it hits the art-house circuit. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
