This film-within-a-film deals with a period of world history that you may not be familiar with. I know I wasn’t until I started doing research for this write-up.

This film takes place from 1915 to 1923, during and after World War I; a very dark period in Armenian history. Canadian-Armenian director/writer Atom Egoyan decided to bring the events of this period to the big screen. It was at this time in history that the Ottoman Empire slaughtered over 1.5 million Armenians. Even to this day, the government of Turkey has yet to officially acknowledge this ever took place. They say the people were just relocated out of that area.

The movie itself is told from the viewpoint of a young driver (newcomer David Alpay) who is hired to work on the production of a movie about the Armenian holocaust. His work on the production leads him through a journey of self-discovery.

Egoyan previously explored his Armenian heritage in the film Next of Kin back in 1983. If the early word-of-mouth on this film is even partly accurate, this should be an extremely powerful film. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
