You know what was an awesome movie idea? The Matrix, that's what. The idea that we could walk around in an imaginary world simply by linking our bodies to machines is great science fiction. Virtual reality is cool. Or at least it was in 1999.

Not to be deterred, director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3) goes back to that well with Surrogates, which modifies the premise slightly but effectively tells an awfully similar story. At some unspecified point in the future, people are able to live their lives from the safety of their own home, never leaving, by sending out surrogates of themselves to work, play, whatever. This feels like the height of laziness to me, but I guess it sounds heavenly to some people. These surrogates are robots that are effectively perfect representations of ourselves. They can be infinitely more sexy and attractive than we are in real life. For people like Comic Book Guy, this is pretty much the dream scenario.

In the world where surrogates exist, everything is pretty much ideal. There's no pain, no fear, no crime. Or there isn't until the first murder in years takes place. Bruce Willis, who plays an FBI agent, must enter the world without the benefit of using his surrogate to try to solve the mystery. Naturally, he'll uncover something much more sinister. If it's a pod where computers are growing humans, I'm out of there. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
