Based on the Tyler Perry play by the same name, The Diary of a Mad Black Woman will become a feature-length film directed by Darren Grant. Perry adapted the play to script form for the film and also has a lead role in the movie.
The story is set in an affluent community where Helen, a devoted, loving wife, discovers on the eve of her 20th anniversary that her husband wants to divorce her so that he can be with her best friend instead. Helen struggles with this sudden change, contending with new and confusing feelings. While she works through her anger and bitterness, she winds up engaging in a number of comedic confrontations that force her to take a deep look at her own jealousy, denial, and urge for revenge. In the end, she understands that in order to move on, she has to rely on her own inner strength, values and compassion to heal.
Kimberly Elise, who recently starred alongside Denzel Washington in The Manchurian Candidate, has the lead role. Also onboard are Steve Harris (The Practice), Shemar Moore (The Brothers), Tamara Taylor (Introducing Dorothy Dandridge) and Cicely Tyson. Distributor Lions Gate is pinning its hopes on the film to have the box office potential of a movie like My Big Fat Greek Wedding. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
