Bond Finds Compass
New James Bond star Daniel Craig will also star in The Golden Compass, New Line's first film in what they hope will be a trilogy. The move will reunite him with his Casino Royale costar Eva Green. Chris Weitz wrote the screenplay and will direct the movie, from Philip Pullman's book.

Eva Follows Compass
Soon after Nicole Kidman climbed onboard, Eva Green has also signed to star in The Golden Compass. She takes the role of Serafina Pekula, a witch who guides Lyra Belacqua (Dakota Blue Richards) on a journey to a parallel universe. The actress will appear as a Bond girl in upcoming film Casino Royale, and has previously starred in Kingdom of Heaven and The Dreamers.

Kidman is Golden
Oscar winner Nicole Kidman will star in The Golden Compass, the first part of author Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. She will play the villainous Mrs. Coulter. British actress Dakota Blue Richards has already been cast in the lead role of Lyra Belacqua. In the story, Lyra travels to an alternate universe to try to rescue her best friend from evil forces.

New Line gets director for Golden Compass
New Line has hired a new director for The Golden Compass, an adaptation of the beloved Philip Pullman book, and the choice is a bit surprising in certain Hollywood circles. After Chris Weitz departed the project, stating that the film's technical challenges were too much for him, they looked at such helmers as Ridley Scott and David Cronenberg, but Tucker's enthusiasm won out in the end. He's most recently directed the upcoming Steve Martin film Shopgirl and previously helmed Hilary and Jackie. The studio is looking to give an indie director a chance at an ambitious project, like they have previously with Peter Jackson and Lord of the Rings.
The Golden Compass tells the story of a young girl named Lyra who runs away from her guardian and travels north to save her best friend. There, she encounters all sorts of strange adventures, including befriending a polar bear. Weitz did write the screenplay despite dropping out as director.

Weitz departs His Dark Materials
Chris Weitz has decided not to direct His Dark Materials for New Line Cinema, citing the "technical challenges of making such an epic." Weitz said that the exit was not due to creative differences, and New Line plans to move forward with the script Weitz wrote for the film.
"Working on 'The Golden Compass" has been an extraordinary high point of my career," said Weitz in Variety. "It will be an extraordinary film, but at this point in my life, I am not the right director to bring it to pass."
The adaptation of the Philip Pullman trilogy had been the source of some recent controversy as it was revealed that New Line has requested that the battle with God be made a more general battle to eliminate religious controversy.
