Bond gets his girl
At long last, MGM and Sony have hired their new Bond girl. Eva Green (The Dreamers) will play Bond love interest Vesper Lynd, where she'll star alongside new Bond Daniel Craig. Along with Green, Jeffrey Wright (Syriana) has also signed to star in the film. He'll play Felix Leiter.

Bond villain announced
Mads Mikkelsen (King Arthur) will play the evil Le Chiffre in the upcoming James Bond film Casino Royale. He joins new James Bond Daniel Craig and Judi Dench as a cast member. Martin Campbell is directing the film. Apparently, the search for Bond girl is also down to a couple of possibilities, with the finalists believed to be Eva Green and Olivia Wilde.

It's official - Craig is Bond
Sony Pictures announced this morning in a London news conference that Daniel Craig will play James Bond in the upcoming Casino Royale, the 21st picture in the storied franchise. He replaces Pierce Brosnan, who the studio reportedly cut loose for cost reasons. Craig is 37-years-old and will be the first blond man to portray 007. He's a popular actor in Britain, with a well-known role on the television series Our Friends in the North as well as starring turns in the crime drama Layer Cake and the indie thriller Enduring Love. As for North American films, he also portrayed Paul Newman's scheming son in Road to Perdition.
Craig has recently become quite a fixture in the London tabloids as well, as he has been linked both to model Kate Moss and actress Sienna Miller, who co-starred with him in Layer Cake.

Bond in line
Sony Pictures has scheduled a London news conference for October 14th, where they'll introduce the new face of James Bond. In the London tabloids, the rumors are flying fast and furious that Daniel Craig (Layer Cake) has been awarded the job, but nothing has been confirmed at this time.

Haggis goes to Casino
Paul Haggis, who was nominated recently for an Academy Award for his adapted screenplay for Million Dollar Baby, has been hired to rewrite the screenplay for the next James Bond film, Casino Royale. Martin Campbell, who previously directed GoldenEye, will stay as director.

Campbell to return to Bond
Martin Campbell, who helped to revive the James Bond franchise when he helmed GoldenEye, is in negotiations to direct the next installment in the series. The film would be set for a 2006 release if he agreed to come aboard.

Brosnan fired
According to the Toronto Sun, Pierce Brosnan says that he was fired from the James Bond role he has been playing for the last several years as the series progresses. The newspaper quotes him as saying, " "And then one day the phone rang -- I was here (in Nassau shooting After The Sunset) -- and my agents told me that the goal posts had moved and that they had changed their minds."
The speculative target list of potential new Bond portrayers includes Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, Gerard Butler, Jude Law, Dougray Scott, Ewan McGregor, Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Eric Bana.

Bond delayed
MGM confirmed on Wednesday that they have been unable to find a new director for the next James Bond adventure. As a result, the film's targeted November 18, 2005 release date is looking like an impossible dream. At this point, the studio is looking to release the film sometime in 2006, at which point MGM will be operating under Sony's ownership.
MGM had been hoping to hire a director by the end of September, but none of their possibilities panned out. Names in the mix included Matthew Vaughn and Paul McGuigan. Meanwhile, despite rumors that Pierce Brosnan is through portraying 007, Variety notes that he has said he'd be interested in returning for a fifth outing. However, he has yet to be approached.
Though the studio and producers are keeping the particulars about the screenplay under wraps, it is said to be a return to the grittier elements of the earlier films, throwing away the special effects focus that has been so central in the past few entries in the series.

Bond in Shambles
Although the British tabloid News of the World is reporting that Eric Bana has been chosen by MGM as the next James Bond, Variety notes that the production is currently in chaos as the studio must search for both a star and a director before shooting starts on the 21st film in the series in six months. Others rumored to be in the running for the role of 007 include Hugh Jackman, Clive Owen, Ioan Gruffudd, Colin Firth, Gerard Butler, Jude Law and Ewan McGregor. Making matters even more complicated is the possibility that MGM might follow the Bourne franchise's example and go younger with an actor such as Orlando Bloom. It's all up in the air as of now, but it sure is intriguing to speculate.

Brosnan done with Bond
Pierce Brosnan has told Entertainment Weekly that he's finished with the James Bond series, saying that Die Another Day was his last Bond film and that he won't be returning for a fifth film. "That's it," said Brosnan, "I've said all I've got to say on the world of James Bond. Bond is another lifetime, behind me." This opens the door for a replacement to take on the coveted role for James Bond 21, currently scheduled to hit theaters in November of 2005.
