China gets first dibs on Mummy

The latest installment in the popular Mummy franchise, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, will hit Chinese theaters a week before being released stateside. Typically, films open in China long after bowing in the United States, although sometimes they are released on the same day. Shooting in Shanghai on The Mummy 3, which has a non-Chinese cast of 180 out of about 2,200, is expected to wrap soon.

A new wife for Fraser in Mummy 3

Maria Bello has signed on to star in The Mummy 3, where she will take on the role originated by Rachel Weisz. She plays Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell, wife of Brendan Fraser's character. Also starring in the film are Luke Ford, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. Rob Cohen directs from a screenplay by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. The movie will take the O'Connell's and their adult son (Ford) to China, where they visit the forbidden tombs. They'll encounter a shape-shifting mummy and a former Chinese emperor (Li) who has been cursed by a wizard (Yeoh).

Cohen in Talks to Direct Third Mummy

Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious; xXx) is in negotiations with Universal Pictures to direct the third film in the Mummy franchise. The stars of the first two films, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, are also in talks to continue their roles in the action series. No story details are known at this time. Stephen Sommers was the director on the first two Mummy features, which were released in 1999 and 2001.
