Like Brad Pitt, Edward Norton also decided to back out of State of Play, a drama to be directed by Kevin Macdonald. However, Norton's spot was quickly snatched up by Ben Affleck for the film, which stars Russell Crowe (3:10 to Yuma) as a journalist who leads a newspaper's murder investigation.

Crowe decides to Play

Russell Crowe (3:10 to Yuma) officially replaced Brad Pitt in State of Play, playing a journalist who leads a newspaper's murder investigation. Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn also star. Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) will direct.

Pitt leaves the State

Brad Pitt backed out of State of Play, a political thriller written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (Lions for Lambs), due to script concerns. The script cannot go under revisions because of the writers strike. Sources say Universal is looking to sign up Johnny Depp or Russell Crowe to take over the part, which calls for a journalist who leads a newspaper's murder investigation. Edward Norton, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman and Robin Wright Penn also star. Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) will direct.

MacDonald to Direct State of Play

Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) will direct State of Play for Universal. Brad Pitt is starring in the drama, which is a remake of the critically acclaimed British miniseries of the same name. In the story, from writer Matthew Michael Carnahan (Lions For Lambs), a congressman's mistress gets killed and a group of investigative reporters work secretly with a police detective to try to solve the crime. Pitt will play a reporter who used to be close to the congressman.

Carnahan has State of Play

Universal Pictures has hired Matthew Michael Carnahan to write the screenplay for the feature adaptation of the British mini-series State of Play. The story centers on a newspaperman who also happens to be the former campaign manager of an up-and-coming politician. When he is assigned to cover a murder conspiracy, it eventually leads him to his former boss. He also becomes involved with his ex-boss's wife. The series won three BAFTA awards, including one for Bill Nighy.
