Apocalypto to get language lessons

Last week, it was announced that Walt Disney Pictures would be the distributor behind Mel Gibson's newest directorial project, Apocalypto. Now, it has been revealed that the project will be filmed in an obscure Mayan dialect, which means that the movie will likely use similar subtitles to those in The Passion of the Christ. That movie was the most successful Aramaic-language film in history. For Apocalypto, which is set 500 years in the past, Gibson will use a newcomer to star - specifically, someone who is indigenous to the area in Mexico where Gibson will shoot. Apparently, the screen is fairly violent, which would indicate that another R-rating will be in the offing when the movie is released in Summer of 2006. Gibson is financing the film and will sell foreign rights himself, and is under a rent-a-system agreement with Disney. Three studios passed on the project before Disney acquired it. There is talk that the studio might program Apocalypto against The Lady in the Water, M. Night Shyamalan's first film apart from Disney.

Gibson heads for Apocalypto

Mel Gibson is getting back behind the camera, with Disney emerging as the winner of the bidding war to distribute the film in North America. The movie is planned for release in summer of 2006. Gibson wrote the screenplay, and sources say that the theme will not be religious. The title is a Greek term that means "an unveiling" or "new beginning". The story will have plenty of action and violence. Gibson does not plan to star in the film, and may not use a known name for the lead role. The movie is set in an ancient civilization around 3,000 years ago.
