Fox goes to Babylon
Twentieth Century Fox is set to finance and distribute the big-budget sci fi epic Babylon A.D., which will be directed by Mathieu Kassovitz (Gothika) from his own screenplay. The futuristic thriller is inspired by the Maurice Dantec novel Babylon Babies, which is set in the near future and centers on genetic manipulation. The book has a mercenary at its center who is given the assignment of delivering a young woman from Russia to Canada. She learns that her charge has been implanted with a synthetic virus, and what is inside her could ultimately lead to the demise of the human race.
Until recently, Kassovitz had primarily focused on smaller-scale films. When he received a call from his idol Steven Spielberg about doing this sci-fi project, though, he started considering it. He took on Gothika to get experience in working with a big budget.
Kassovitz has also co-starred in such films as Amelie.
