Picturehouse goes to the Prairie

Picturehouse has acquired North American distribution rights to A Prairie Home Companion, the bigscreen spinoff of Garrison Keillor's U.S. radio show. Keillor adapted the screenplay, and Robert Altman directs. Like most Altman films, the movie is an ensemble picture, with a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan, Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Kline, Virginia Madsen, John C. Reilly and Maya Rudolph. The distributor appears to be targeting a release date somewhere between April and June of 2006.

Prairie Home Companion gets more cast

Tommy Lee Jones has joined the large ensemble cast of Robert Altman's big-screen adaptation of Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. Other cast members include Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Kline, Virginia Madsen, John C. Reilly and Maya Rudolph. Keillor wrote the screenplay himself, which sets the movie backstage at his famous radio show. The staff and performers there discover that it also just happens to be the show's last night on the air after 30 years. Keillor will portray himself in the film.

Madsen goes Home

Virginia Madsen and L.Q. Jones have joined the ensemble cast of director Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion. Garrison Keillor wrote the screenplay based on his own experiences broadcasting the show by the same name. The large cast will also include Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson, Lily Tomlin, Maya Rudolph and Lindsay Lohan. Keillor will play himself. The movie is a fictionalized imagining of what happens on the day of the last broadcast of the show. The players are unaware that the show is ending, but soon find out. Madsen will portray a "dangerous woman," while Jones is set to play a musician who has been regularly featured on the the show for years. Streep and Tomlin are the last two remaining sisters of a five-sister act, and Lohan is Streep's daughter. Harrelson and Reilly will play singing cowboys, and Kline will portray a security guard. Rudolph has the role of the stage manager.

Cast set for Prairie

A number of cast members have signed up to star for director Robert Altman in his spin-off of the legendary Garrison Keillor radio variety show, A Prairie Home Companion. Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Lily Tomlin and Maya Rudolph are all confirmed as having roles in the film. Additionally, Kevin Kline is currently in talks. Keillor wrote the screenplay and will appear as himself. The movie is based on the idea that the award winning show, which is carried on 500 radio stations across the U.S., is being shut down after a 30 year run. When the crew prepares for the final broadcast, long-brewing passions come to the surface, while a stage manager struggles to hold it all together for one last time.
