Playtone goes to City of Ember
Playtone, Tom Hanks' and Gary Goetzman's production company, will follow-up the family film The Polar Express with The City of Ember. They've purchased the rights to the Jeanne DuPrau young adult bestseller by the same name. Playtone is currently talking with Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) to write the screenplay and Gil Kenan to make his live-action directing debut. Walden Media may also come aboard as co-producer and financier.
The story is set in a future where the Earth's atmosphere has grown too toxic to sustain human life. As a result, society has moved to underground cities. The main focus of the film will be two teenagers. One is a girl who dreams of being a messenger because the job would let her go above ground. The other one has visions of working underground on a generator whose failure could doom the underground city.
