Washington to helm The Great Debaters
Denzel Washington will direct Miramax's The Great Debaters, and is in fact already scouting locations to film the project. Based on the true story of a professor at the historically black Wiley College in Texas, Melvin B. Tolson inspired his students to form the school's first-ever debate team. Eventually, the group went on to beat Harvard in the national championships. The original screenplay was written by Robert Eisele and is in the process of being rewritten by Suzan-Lori Parks. Washington is hoping to begin production on the film next fall.
