Fox makes Russian deal
Fox Searchlight is set to distribute the highest-grossing Russian film of all time, along with its sequel and prequel. After a fiercely competitive battle with other studios, Fox paid over $2 million apiece for the Russian action films Night Watch, its sequel Day Watch and the big-budget prequel Dusk Watch (which will be handled by the larger Fox division itself).
The first film was written and directed by Timur Bekmambetov and was released in Russia on July 8th. Since that time, it's made as much as The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King did in Russia.
Night Watch is the first film to be adapted from a trilogy of books by Sergei Lukyaneko, which centers around events that take place after a 1,000 year truce between good and evil is broken in Moscow. The film follows the same themes and style of The Matrix, with amazing visual effects and a story that follows opposing supernatural forces that are in search of "The One." In this case, this individual is a child, and that child can decide to either side with good or evil.
