Bassett set for Akeelah and the Bee
Angela Bassett has joined the cast of Lions Gate's Akeelah and the Bee, where she'll star opposite Laurence Fishburne and Keke Palmer. The film is being directed by Doug Atchinson from his own script. The movie is about an 11-year-old girl from South Los Angeles whose journey to compete in the National Spelling Bee unites her community. Palmer will play the girl, and Bassett will portray her mother.

Lions Gate Films has partnered with Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner's 2929
Entertainment to handle financing and distribution of the Laurence
Fishburne starrer Akeelah and the Bee. The movie centers around an
11-year-old from Los Angeles whose journey to the National Spelling
Bee serves to unite her community.
