Favreau goes to Mars
Jon Favreau has signed on to direct John Carter of Mars for Paramount. He replaces Kerry Conran (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow), who had been attached to helm. The movie is based on the sci-fi series by classic writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, and the screenplay was most recently worked by Ehren Kruger. John Carter is the story's central character, and his tale begins with the Civil War veteran retreating into a cave to avoid capture by an Apache tribe. He hits a time portal, and is transported to the planet of Barsoom, where a group of 12-foot tall men take him prisoner.

Kruger to pen Princess of Mars
Screenwriter Ehren Kruger (The Ring) has signed with Paramount to write the movie adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel A Princess of Mars. The film should begin shooting within the next year with Kerry Conran (Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow) at the helm.
A Princess of Mars was the first in the 11-volume John Carter of Mars series, and centers around Carter, an American Civil War veteran. When he retreats into a cave in an effort to evade capture by the Apaches, he is taken via a time portal to the planet of Barsoom (which Carter believes is Mars). There, Carter is taken prisoner by 12-foot-tall Green Men.

Conran finds his Princess
Kerry Conran, whose Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is receiving terrific advance buzz ahead of its September release, is in talks to direct A Princess of Mars for Paramount. Conran's name surfaced for the sci-fi tentpole after Robert Rodriguez became ineligible to direct after resigning from the DGA. The film is based on the first book in Edgar Rice Burroughs' 11-book John Carter of Mars series, and the studio is hoping to develop it into a major franchise.
