What’s director McG (a.k.a. Joseph McGinty Nichol) been doing with his time since he finished work on both Charlie’s Angels movies? He’s been playing with miniature die-cast racecars. Well, not exactly. But he has been getting ready to work on this live action film featuring the popular Mattel toy cars.
There have been other incarnations of Hot Wheels before this one. There are computer and video games, there are DVD/VHS features out, and there was a fairly popular Saturday morning TV series from 1969 to 1971. But with the recent popularity of car movies such as xXx and Fast and the Furious, this seems like a good time to bring the Hot Wheels franchise “to life” on the big screen.
The possibilities for storylines of this movie seem limitless and director McG and screenwriter James Robinson seem to be bringing together the most common elements. In a press release McG said, “We want to create a timeless story that will work for everyone – a charismatic young hero, great stakes and jeopardy, and a fantastic love story...with state-of-the-art visual effects and the hottest collection of automobiles ever brought to the screen.”
We’re definitely not going to see the violence that has been part of the other recent car movies, but I’m sure the action and horsepower will be overflowing the screen. Look for a summer 2005 release for this movie. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
