Yet another British gangster movie. This genre has become quite popular in recent years with some quality films being made. Filmmaking veteran Mike Hodges, who made his comeback with the U.S. arthouse hit Croupier, is directing this movie with Trevor Preston taking care of screenwriting.

The basic premise of the film is similar to Hodges’ 1971 U.K. hit film Get Carter starring the legendary Michael Caine. Sylvester Stallone starred in the 2000 remake. A former gang leader (Clive Owen) has retired to a quiet life in the English countryside. However, the peace is broken when he is dragged back into the “business” to avenge the rape and murder of his brother (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) by a criminal/car dealer (Malcolm McDowell).

This film was originally scheduled to get an October 2003 release date, but that was been pushed back to April 2004 before the studio finally settled on June. If you like the British crime genre and are lucky enough to live near an independent film venue, I suggest you check this one out. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
