Max, who works as a UN interpreter, wants to prove to his best friend of 15 years, Kate, that he’s in love with her. Inept in the romance department, Max decides the best way to demonstrate his devotion is by re-enacting scenes from classic movie romances of the ‘30s and ‘40s. But despite his efforts, Kate remains blissfully unaware of Max’s intentions, continuing to see him as the friend he has always been. Will Max be able to break through her perception of him and win her heart?
Romantic Comedy is currently being billed as a spoof of the genre, so how outlandish Max’s recreations become will probably depend on how broad the comedy will be in the spoof. As the film is currently in the earliest stages of production, few clues as to its eventual tone can be determined; however, with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the role of Kate, the creative team have a wide range of styles available to them, as Gellar has shown herself capable of both very subtle parody and over-the-top satire. As filming gets underway, and casting for the remaining roles in the film is firmed up, a more concrete idea of the film’s eventual tone should take shape. We will be updating this page as more information becomes available, so be sure to check back periodically to see how the romance of Romantic Comedy blossoms. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
