Starts out pretty rough but gains a lot of momentum toward the end. |
The civil war is upon us, yet only a select few who have encountered the malevolence created by the Umbrella corporation fully appreciate how precarious mankind's position is. Our very sentience is threatened by those who were once like us, friends and loved ones who now live by but one mantra: Itchy. Tasty.
Alice was the first one to discover this new wonderland of horror hidden below the surface of Raccoon City. Our protagonist awakened to find herself naked in a shower and at first incapable of remembering the events which had led to her predicament. Then she met others who once were warriors, soldiers of fortune paid to perform reconnaissance on an entity known only as The Hive. Their ranks were quickly reduced in number as friends were turned into the most savage of foes. A single bite is all that is needed for the T-virus to mutate human flesh into the accursed zombie state.
As the hellish events unfolded, Matt Addison joined Alice and her militant friend Rain. He sought to find out the fate of his sister, Lisa, a scientist at the laboratory who unbeknownst to Matt had fallen victim to the zombie drug. As Alice helped him search, she came to discover that she too was a soldier, but also the woman who had accidentally sealed Lisa's fate. Matt and Alice managed to escape the underground Hive but not before Matt was forced to eliminate his sister and Alice to shoot her bi-curious military friend Rain.
Even as Matt and Alice emerged from their subterranean nightmare, more horror awaited them. Matt had become infested with a more powerful version of the Umbrella virus, and he was mutating into a violent monster. Alice was separated from him and drugged unconscious. She awoke to find herself alone in a hospital, and she had needles embedded in her newly mulleted, half-shaven head. When she went outside, her worst fears were realized as the streets were empty and the headlines of a newspaper stated the obvious. The dead walk.

Fear not though. Alice's tale is not hopeless as Resident Evil: Apocalypse prepares to continue from the exactly the moment where we last saw our shotgun toting heroine. She will not wage her war alone, though. Along for the ride will be actual characters from the Resident Evil videogames, as the timeline of the movie and the games will be merged into one during this mission. Jill Valentine, whom you might know as the Master of Unlocking, has already starred in two of the games and now she will be a primary character in the movie sequel. She will be joined by her Resident Evil: Nemesis co-horts, Carlos Olivera and Nicholai Sokolov. The four of them will be chased by Matt Addison, who is fully mutated now into a giant, invulnerable creature who still finds himself attached to Alice. As he pursues his friend from a former life, Jill Valentine leads her and the others in an attempt to find some way to stop the spread of the T-virus before it is able to manifest itself in all of the remaining human residents of the Raccoon Valley area.
Resident Evil was treated unfairly by movie critics who penalized it for being exactly what it should have been. Never has a movie adaptation of a videogame so perfectly mirrored the tone and presence of the game itself. Camera shots were even framed in an unusual fashion to give the unique flavor of third person survival horror. With the way the first movie ended, the sequel was always an eventuality and now we see it being prepared for release approximately two years after the original. Until then, we are left to patiently await its arrival. But at least we have a copy of the DVD, which contains the wonderful drunken commentary from Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez.
