Director and writer Sara Sugarman brings the quirkiness of the Welsh village of Ogw to life in this charming film.

When Annie-Mary Pugh (Rachel Griffiths) was 16, she won a scholarship to study opera in Milan. She had to decline because her mother was sick and dying at that time. Ever since, she has been living with her overbearing father Jack (Jonathan Pryce). She has been helping him run the bakery he owns and he has been totally unappreciative.

When Jack suffers a stroke, she has to help out even more. But when a local talent show is arranged, she sees this as her chance to finally break free from the stranglehold he has on her life. With the help of some of the townsfolk, she rediscovers the beautiful singing voice she had forgotten about many years ago.

Most reviews of this film have been on the negative side. The story seems to be a bunch of slightly humorous scenes that have been thrown together. The story doesn’t seem to flow very well and the peculiar people of Ogw get on your nerves. But if you’re a fan of Rachel Griffiths or would like to see what Wales looks like, this may be the film for you. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
