Eddie Murphy's next film is a science fiction/action/comedy set in the near future. Eddie plays Pluto Nash, owner of a nightclub on the moon. The spot is sufficiently successful to have attracted the interest of the local mob, of which Pluto wants no part. Assisted by his pistol-packin' Momma (Pam Grier), a soon-to-be-obsolete robot (Randy Quaid), a beautiful Terran singer (Rosario Douglas), and his best friend, a Dean Martin-style Italian singer (Jay Mohr), Pluto fights to retain control of his club and defeat the Mafioso. Peter Boyle, Illeana Douglas and Joe Pantoliano are also in the cast. A science fiction/comedy Mob film set on the moon. The mind boggles at such a concept-by-committee approach. One would like to believe that the script must be better than the synopsis makes it sound, given the participation of Eddie Murphy. For those who feel this way, I have two words for you: Holy Man. Eddie isn't known for his ability to pick roles; for every one that's a smash, there are at least three that are abysmal failures. Judging from the summary, this one could go either way; we might end up with another 48 Hours or Trading Places, or we could end up with another Golden Child or Distinguished Gentleman. Given the synopsis, I'm leaning toward the Golden Child end. Warner Bros currently has this little gem scheduled for the spring, which would indicate the studio thinks about as highly of its box-office chances as do I. The teaser only reinforces that feeling; a mishmash of low comedy, standard SF shots and flashes of Eddie Murphy...well, being Eddie Murphy. If you're into Eddie Murphy, that just might be enough for you. It remains to be seen if that is draw enough to spell box-office success. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP) November 8, 2002
