A joint Iranian/Italian production, Secret Ballot tells the story of a soldier whose solitary stay on a desert beach in Iran is interrupted by a ballot box that lands via a parachute from the sky. Shortly afterward, a woman arrives on a boat and informs the soldier that she is the pollster in charge of collecting electoral results for that inhospitable territory. Though he would rather be chasing smugglers, the soldier is forced to accompany her through the desert in his jeep so that she can gather the votes. The film is written and directed by Babak Payami, who won the Special Jury Prize for Best Director at the 2001 Venice International Film Festival. It was the first film acquired by Sony Pictures Classics at the Toronto International Film Festival and is a Persian-language film with English subtitles. It will be released on a very limited basis in New York City and Los Angeles, and despite comments that this film should be appealing and humorous to a wide-ranging audience, it will probably only play in the art houses of larger cities.
