This film takes a look at a very influential period in the history of music. The movie is about the founders of Factory Records, which launched such groups as Joy Division (which later became New Order), Happy Mondays, and James. The setting is Manchester, England, from the late 1970s to the early 1990s.

TV journalist and music impresario Tony Wilson (Steve Coogan), who was the driving force behind the "Madchester" music scene, tells the story. As with most rock-music movies, this film has its share of sex, drugs, and general debauchery. We see the intense partying at the legendary Hacienda Club, and see the characters' lives spiraling out of control.

Some reviews have mentioned that a previous knowledge of the people and places of that time is helpful, but not necessary. It stands on its own quite well as an accurate and enjoyable representation of that period. If you enjoy music from those British bands or are just a music-history buff, this film may be the ticket for you. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
