This film is based on the book of the same name by Adrian C. Louis. Screenwriter Jennifer D. Lyne adapts the book to the big screen, with Chris Eyre at the helm of his second feature film.

The film portrays the struggles of Native Americans in one of the poorest areas of the United States, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. They have an unemployment rate around 75% and a high level of domestic abuse.

We focus on the troubled and complicated relationship of two brothers in that community. Mogie Yellow Lodge, played by veteran Canadian actor Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves, The Green Mile), spends most of his time in a drunken stupor. His younger brother, Rudy (Eric Schweig), is an investigator with the local police department and a vigilante in his spare time. There are many powerful scenes between these two brothers, and Eyre does an excellent job capturing their emotions.

This film had its world premiere at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. Audiences and critics were equally impressed with this effort. This powerful film will have an impact on audiences of all backgrounds. If you don't get a chance to see this in theaters, it is supposed to be on the cable channels Starz and Encore.
