130/169 Max Braden Vanilla Ice was funny, and I love that Sandler brings back these old performers. Otherwise you either like Adam Sandler doing his usual thing, or you don't.

Remember a few months ago when you believed Adam Sandler had stopped trying when you saw the ads for Jack & Jill? That’s My Boy is NOT the movie that will change your mind on this matter. Instead, this is Sandler trying to graduate into paternal roles after 15 years of being the sophomoric guy you would never want raising children.

In point of fact, this is exactly the premise of the film. Sandler portrays the father of Andy Samberg’s character and, for obvious reasons, this person is deeply ashamed of his father. On this, the week of his wedding, the last thing he wants is for his father to arrive and provide a disruptive force in the proceedings. Gee, you will never guess what happens next.

Of course, there is more to the story than this. That’s My Boy has been the subject of nearly universal criticism for its odd decision to center the basis of the story upon sexual assault. Sandler’s character impregnates a 22-year-old teacher when he is only 12, which means that he is not that much older than his son. There has been much outrage over this decision and Sony appears to be distancing itself from this project, a rarity for a Sony film. As such, our expectations for That’s My Boy would be tempered even if Sandler were coming off a hit, which is exactly the opposite of what Jack & Jill was. That’s My Boy is positioned to be a punchline of 2012 for all the wrong reasons. (David Mumpower/BOP)
