Disneynature is the latest branch of the Mouse House. The titles released under this arm are obviously focused upon nature in all its beauty. The first of these, Disney’s Earth, earned a surprising $32 million domestically and over $109 million worldwide. Disney’s Oceans was not quite as popular domestically, grossing $19.4 million, but its world-wide revenue was still quite good at $82.5 million. 2011’s African Cats marked the first box office disappointment for Disneynature. It earned only $21 million in global revenue.
Chimpanzee is the fourth major release and like African Cats before it, the subject matter here is clear. A baby chimpanzee named Oscar is abandoned in the forest. Left to its own fate, the poor little thing would surely die. Oscar attempts to find a surrogate to raise him, but each of the women in his tribe have babies of their own to nurture. Unexpectedly, another male chimpanzee, the leader of the tribe, adopts Oscar. Tim Allen narrates the story of their real life struggles to survive their harsh environment and develop a loving relationship. (David Mumpower/BOP)
