There's a laugh or two here. Good that they got the entire cast back. |
The bed has not been on fire with passionate love in quite a while. Our therapist said not to see them no more after American Wedding in 2003. The series was becoming a bore. Yes, the American Pie group had driven us crazy but we still found ourselves wondering when were they coming home. Laaaaaaaaaaaid.
The above only makes sense if you have ever paid any attention to the lyrics of James’ Laid, the song given fame by the American Pie trilogy. They were the raucous teen sex comedy grouping of a generation, a more genteel Porky’s that became a huge box office factor. This is particularly impressive given the lackluster nature of the cast, only one of whom (Alyson Hannigan) is still getting consistent work. Despite the fall of the American Pie cast, these three movies earned over $100 million each with a combined worldwide gross of roughly $650 million.
Studios look at franchises as the backbone of their infrastructure. No matter whether a teenager knows who Jason Biggs and Tara Reid are, there was always going to be another American Pie movie at some point. 2012 marks the return of the series with the obvious theme: a class reunion. Jim the pie-fucker, Michelle the flute-fucker and their friends will reunite. Isn’t it shocking that Eddie Kaye Thomas and Mena Suvari were available?
Anyway, with three main films and a series of straight-to-DVD releases, the American Pie franchise has proven quite lucrative over the years. The hope here is that the nine year absence from theaters has caused Millennials to reminisce about the days of yore when people laughed at Stifler’s Mom and the word MILF was cemented into the lexicon. My suspicion is that this is a sequel no one was wanting. As such, this should become the first film in the franchise to fall short of $100 million but given the modest $50 million budget (we’ve all heard Tara Reid “works” cheap), it should still be another profitable endeavor. After this, we will be left with American Reunion 2-5 and, eventually, American Nursing Home. (David Mumpower/BOP)
