Though I’m barely over a quarter-century old, there are still only a few periods in my life that I would be open to re-living. I’d love to go back and enjoy college all over again. I wouldn’t even mind going back to elementary school just to play with rounded-tip scissors and glue. But high school? *shudder* I would never want to go back to high school. The hallway gossiping was less-than-enjoyable and back-door backstabbing was almost intolerable . . . but the worst part (the aspect of high school that makes my skin crawl) was the suffocating air of peer pressure.

Peer pressure could get you to do anything. A couple of snide glances from the popular-elite (think The Plastics from Mean Girls) and you’d never wear those jeans again. Some audible snickering from the other side of the cafeteria and you’d be begging your mom for $60 for new Nike shoes. When you’re a high schooler, the dictatorial whims of peer pressure rule over your life with an iron fist.

And here’s an even scarier fact: peer pressure doesn’t go away after high school. This is a realization that the main character in the new Screen Gems film, Armored, comes to very quickly. In the film, a young armored car guard is persuaded by his veteran cohorts to steal a load of cargo from one of their trucks, which is worth approximately $10 million. That’s a pretty harsh case of newbie hazing if you ask me.

There is little else known about the plot – the contents of the cargo, the consequences of their actions, their plan to make away with the loot, etc. – but we can make a few educated guesses based on the filmography of director Nimród Antal (talk about a name that didn’t win him any friends in high school). Antal burst onto the international film scene with a feature named Kontroll, which follows a metro worker’s frantic escape from a deranged murderer who goes around pushing travelers in front of oncoming metro cars. Antal’s follow-up, the 2007 film Vancancy with Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson, focused on a bickering couple who gets attacked in their hotel room by an insane, rampaging maniac.

Judging from these two past films, one would expect that a good dose of tension, confrontations, violence and murder will accompany the plot of Armored. Just a hunch. (Jason Lee/BOP)
