Will Ferrell and Adam McKay are responsible for two instant comedy classics, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The long time friends and co-workers during their respective tenures at Saturday Night Live are masters of the genre, meaning that when they make a humorous movie, people should pay attention. Of course, The Foot Fist Way does not technically qualify under this umbrella, as neither of them wrote, directed or even produced this movie. It is, however, one of the first non-Ferrell projects created by their production house, Gary Sanchez Productions. This means that disciples of Ferrell and McKay are responsible for this movie, reason enough to put it on your film radar.
The Foot Fist Way tells the story of Fred Simmons (Danny McBride, perhaps best known as Martin in the Heartbreak Kid), a cuckolded husband who deals with his wife’s unfaithfulness in a strange manner. He starts to pick fights with people. Anyone who threatens, taunts or teases him gets kicked and punched. Sure, this doesn’t sound like a unique film concept, but it does afford the potential for exactly the sort of broad physical comedy that has made Ferrell a star. McBride will be trying to follow in his footsteps this summer through co-starring roles in The Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder. Before that happens, however, this movie will be available in limited release, and it may be worth checking out. Since its debut on the film festival circuit back in 2006, The Foot Fist Way has proven to be a shockingly well-received comedy among movie snobs, meaning that low-brow is playing high-brow.
