Relatively boring at times - none of the actors seemed to care - but the story had its moments. More touching than it probably should have been. Drew Barrymore was the highlight. |
What has happened to Robert De Niro, exactly? Has he been rendered so toothless by the Meet the Parents films that he's left to take roles in movies like Righteous Kill, What Just Happened, and now Everybody's Fine?
In the film, which is a remake of Giuseppe Tornatore's Stano Tutti Bene, De Niro plays a widower who takes off on a spur-of-the-moment road trip to try to make a connection with each of his children. As he enters their lives again, he realizes that each of them has issues that make their own situations far from perfect. Sounds...well, it sounds like About Schmidt, but not good.
The movie does have the benefit of also starring Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell, but it's bogged down by being the final release of Miramax. The studio, which has been shut down by Disney, has very little reason to throw support behind this film and its box office will almost surely reflect that fact. I guess De Niro's going to have to rely on Little Fockers to give him any sort of box office clout. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
