The winner of the best screenplay award at the 2001 Cannes International Film Festival, this Bosnian film is an allegory of the heated conflict in the much fought-over Western European region. Written and Directed by Danis Tanovic, the story is about two soldiers from differeing sides of the Serbian/Bosnian conflict meeting face to face on the battlefield. Their situation is made more complicated when they realize that in the trench with them is another Serbian soldier who just happens to be sitting on a land mine. Containing a fair dose of satire and social commentary, the film becomes more complicated and takes on serious social issues through a serious yet funny approach. This film is to the Bosnian conflict as 3 Kings is to the Gulf War.

While winning the best screenplay award at Cannes is a wonderful achievement, it will most likely only translate to possible box office success in Europe. Due to the unfamiliarity with the subject matter, the film will find it difficult to find a North American audience until it hits the home video market. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
