What hath You Got Served wrought? Simple. Dance movies. Lots and lots of dance movies. Mostly empowering, always banal, but always dancing. And now, there is another one. After her sister’s death, our heroine, played by Nina Dobrev, pulls a reverse Fresh Prince and returns to her crime-ridden home after spending years in a posh private school. While there, she rekindles a passion for step dancing which is the only logical thing to do, if you really think about it.
The film was shot in Canada with mostly Canadian actors, but was directed by Ian Iqbal Rashid, who helmed the brilliant and underrated Touch of Pink; a film that showed everyone that Kyle MacLachlan can do a mean Cary Grant impression. With a director known for the ability of combining serious topics with humor, this might be a departure from the cheesy, heavy-handed dance movies of recent years.
In the last year, the dance movie genre can do no wrong and is rapidly becoming the guaranteed success that horror was until recently. However, like any one trick genre, no one knows its staying power. There is an excellent and hopeful chance that the populace won't be able to stomach this one alongside the flood of dance movie sequels (Stomp the Yard 2, Step Up 2, Save the Last Dance 2, Breakin’ 3: Seriously?, etc.) being released over the next few months.
