Digg Button
If the name Alexandre Aja seems vaguely familiar to you, there is probably a good reason for that. The French writer-director was responsible for the acclaimed 2003 French language thriller and head-scratcher Haute Tension, the success of which attracted Hollywood’s eye and he was given the reigns of the gory 2006 remake of horror god Wes Craven’s early film The Hills Have Eyes. The Hills Have Eyes was a modest hit and earned a respectable three-times its estimated $14 budget in domestic receipts alone.

Aja’s directorial followup to Hills is Mirrors, starring the unstoppable Jack Bauer… err, I mean Kiefer Sutherland. Sutherland plays a security guard who discovers that the mirrors in a department store where he works are rather evil. The secrets behind the horrifying mirrors begin to terrorize him and even threaten his family. The concept sure sounds rather hokey. What’s next: a deadly house? A homicidal doll? Or maybe killer tomatoes from outer space? That said, Aja has shown that he is more than capable of handling terror and scaring your pants off. The rest of the cast are relative unknowns so there will be a lot on Sutherland’s shoulders. But given the proven success of 24, can people accept him as anything other than a superhuman federal agent? (Michael Bentley/BOP)
