Position Staff In Brief
6/98 David Mumpower Sparkling script helps In Bruges win the coveted vote for most pleasant surprise of the year.
7/196 Max Braden A European kin to Pulp Fiction, this starts off slow but ends with a bang with some good laughs in between. But also some uneasy politically incorrect ones too.
9/43 Kim Hollis Just a marvelous script, and really well acted. And I don't even like Colin Farrell.
14/52 Sean Collier Martin McDonagh is absolutely brilliant.

In Bruges will debut at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, and then will be followed with a theatrical release shortly after. The movie takes place in glorious Bruges, a gorgeous medieval city located in Belgium. The beauty of the town stands in stark contrast to the violence taking place in the film, which features Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hit men who have been ordered by their boss (Ralph Fiennes) to go for a spot of relaxation in the city for a couple of weeks.

Naturally, the two men feel quite out of place in this pleasant tourist destination. They see all the local sights, with Farrell's character Ray despising the place while Gleeson's Ken finds some measure of peace and enrichment. However, the longer their trip lasts, the weirder it gets. They have odd experiences with locals, tourists and a dwarf American actor who is shooting an art film. Ray finds romance, but it seems that his paramour may have secrets of her own.

And of course, they soon get a call from the boss that throws everything into chaos. Look for this film, to be distributed in North America by Focus Features, to have a real draw with fans of crime capers and independent film. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
