Henry Bean's directorial debut is a powerful and inflammatory film about religion. Bean was inspired by the true story of Daniel Burros, a member of the American Nazi Party who committed suicide after his Jewish background was revealed.

The character we follow in this film is Daniel Balint (Ryan Gosling). He was raised in the Jewish faith, but grows up to be an anti-Semitic urban terrorist. At an underground neo-Nazi group meeting, he impresses the leadership and they take him under their wing. This fuels his hatred for Jews. Balint has many conflicted emotions. He feels "the modern world is a Jewish disease", but he secretly respects the Torah.

Bean has done an excellent job portraying the life of this individual. This film won the Grand Jury Prize for Drama at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and also won the Gold St. George at the 2001 Moscow International Film Festival. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
