Debra Messing and Téa Leoni star in the latest film from Woody Allen. In what will probably be his best film in a long time, Allen plays a director who has to direct his ex-wife in a film. The reason this could be Allen's best film in a while is because it is a film in and about Hollywood, and will surely feature some incredibly funny scenes. Much like Robert Altman's The Player, Hollywood Ending will be a master's return home, and should contain some great insight as well as clever and subtle jabs at Hollywood, an institution with which Allen has never been really friendly.

This will be the third Allen film released by DreamWorks after the relatively-successful Small-Time Crooks and Curse of the Jade Scorpion. The beauty of Allen's films is that they cost next-to-nothing to shoot, and with his in-grown fan base, he will almost always turn a profit on his films. Of course, his films might benefit from a holiday release as they could receive Oscar buzz; case in point, Gosford Park. Nevertheless, Allen's box office is fairly consistent and predictable; the only differentiator would be the reviews and the buzz the film receives. In addition, the film is tentatively scheduled to be released against Spider-Man and will attempt to cash in on the fact that people will be out in the theatres to watch the potential blockbuster. Such release strategy has worked before, so it remains to be seen how much Hollywood Ending will benefit from it. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
