This film, based on the novel of the same name by Kirsty Gunn, marks the feature-film directorial debut of Christine Jeffs. The film takes a detailed look at the collapse of a family and marriage.

The film is about 13-year-old Janey Phelon's (Alicia Fulford-Wierzbicki) sexual and moral awakening. Her family is on their annual vacation at a beachside cottage. Her parents are using this as a last chance to save their marriage, but neither of them seems to really want to keep the relationship going. Janey's mother, Kate (Sarah Peirse), drinks and flirts with everyone and her husband, Ed (Alistair Browning), is disgusted by her behavior. Janey has never liked her mother, and this behavior adds fuel to her hatred.

When they meet Cady, a photographer, it ends up driving an even wider wedge into their family relationship. Of course, Kate makes advances toward him. Janey sees this as her opportunity to finally destroy her relationship with her mother once and for all.

Reviews of this film have been fairly positive so far. They say that Jeffs has done an incredible job capturing the downfall of this family. Much praise also goes to Alicia Fulford-Wierzbicki for her very mature performance. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
