Have you ever wondered where the extreme sports movement got its start? This award-winning documentary takes you back to Southern California in the 1970s and brings you an amazing look at the kids that started it all.

Director Stacy Peralta was one of the founding members of the Zephyr Skateboard Team, AKA The Z-Boys. This gang of misfits lived in the Santa Monica, California area. During the day they would surf, but at night or when the waves weren't good they brought their surfing to land in the form of a skateboard. They would adapt their unique surfing styles to the pavement, making up moves that no one had ever done before.

The water shortages of that time in Southern California made pools dry up, and the gang took advantage. They headed to the luxurious homes of Beverly Hills, looked for drained pools, hopped the fences, and let it all hang out. Many times, they had to get away from the authorities. Eventually, they caught the eye of corporate sponsors who threw them offers and asked them to represent the companies.

This movie has been well received by audiences and critics alike. The director has done a great job compiling all the footage from this period. Editor and music supervisor Paul Crowder has put together a great soundtrack and done a masterful job putting the finishing touches on Peralta's vision. This film won a couple awards at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, including Best Director-Documentary and a tie for Audience Award-Documentary. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
