Academy Award winners Mira Sorvino and Ben Kingsley star in this film version of the play by Pierre Marivaux, which was first performed in 1732.

The story follows Leonide, Princess of Sparta (Sorvino), who is the ruler of lands that were taken by her father. The throne rightfully belongs to Agis (Jay Rodan). When Leonide spies Agis swimming in a lake, she falls in love with him and wants to give back his birthright. However, the philosopher Hermocrates (Kingsley) has raised Agis to hate the princess. To get an audience with Agis, Leonide and her maid disguise themselves as male students and sneak into the villa where Agis lives.

If you've never had the chance to see this play performed on stage, you may want to keep an eye out for this film at your local art house. Critics have said that this film brings the true essence of the play to the big screen. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
