A reissue of John Sayles' 1980 directorial debut, Return of the Secaucus 7 is a film that made a number of critics' Best of the '80s lists. Made on a budget of only $60,000, the movie had virtually no star power at the time and still doesn't.
The Secaucus 7 of the movie's title are seven friends who were arrested during their college days in New Jersey when they were on their way to a protest in Washington, DC. The film is set ten years after that event, as the friends gather at the home of Mike and Katie, who are now schoolteachers in New Hampshire. As each friend arrives at the house or is in the process of traveling to the house, we learn more about the characters as the group gets reacquainted and the different individuals begin to re-examine themselves and one another.
If the general premise of Return of the Secaucus 7 sounds familiar, that's probably because The Big Chill, which had a much larger impact at the box office, was inspired by this independent production.
