Craig Lucas directs this indie film, which is based on his own play by the same name. The story is described as a combination of Hitchcockian psychological thriller and Greek tragedy.

The movie takes place inside the select world of Hollywood's elite. An emerging screenwriter (Peter Sarsgaard) is offered a million dollar contract for his screenplay based on his own personal experiences with a lover who died from AIDS. However, as anyone who has studied the inner workings of Hollywood knows, there are conditions and changes which must be met. The newbie scripter won't be able to keep the deal unless he changes the film's male character into a woman.

Along with Peter Sarsgaard, The Dying Gaul boasts one of the better casts that will work onscreen together in 2005. Campbell Scott plays a ruthless, bisexual studio executive who takes an interest in both the movie project and its writer, while Patricia Clarkson portrays Scott's wife. She is tolerant of her husband's extracurricular activities, and soon becomes curious about his new lover.

The Dying Gaul was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, and has been building some pretty significant buzz in the months leading up to its release. Look for it to make some noise when it comes to end-of-year awards. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
