The trademark dark humor of director Todd Solondz comes through brilliantly in this two-part film. He also takes on many controversial themes including disability, racism, and sexuality.
The first part of the film is set on a college campus in the 1980s. The story revolves around three students and their creative writing teacher. Marcus (Leo Fitzpatrick) and Vi (Selma Blair) have an intense relationship; however, Marcus breaks up with Vi because he feels she patronizes him. Vi goes to a bar and her evening reads like a Penthouse letter.
The second part of the film is about a failed actor (Paul Giamatti) who wants to become a documentary filmmaker. He tries to get a family headed by John Goodman to be the subject of a documentary -- a "day in the life" kind of film.
There is no connection between the two sections of the film with either characters or themes. They just both look at ways of telling a story. Reviews from film festivals where this film has been shown have been positive so far. Keep an eye out for this film at your local limited release venues. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
