On the Big Board
Position Staff In Brief
19/65 Kim Hollis I'm stunned at the film's bad reviews. I enjoyed the dialogue and particularly Ian McShane.
32/159 David Mumpower Woody Allen the director should have toned down Woody Allen the actor but this is one of the wittiest movies of 2006.
33/68 Michael Bentley It's a fun and quirky little romance-mystery story.

Perhaps Woody Allen has found a new muse in the persona of Scarlett Johansson. After a string of critical and commercial flops they teamed last year for Match Point, which if not a return to the best of Woody Allen was at least refreshingly not a complete disaster. Allen returns to comedy (and to starring in his own film) with Scoop, where he plays a magician who teams up with a student journalist and apparently a ghost to try to solve the mystery of the Tarot Card Serial Killer.

Their primary suspect is a British aristocrat (Hugh Jackman), and the young reporter begins to date him to try to get evidence for his guilt. It gets more complicated when she actually starts to fall for him. After finding relative success with a dark mystery, Allen follows it up with a farcical comedy, and lets hope he's refound his funny bone. (Dan Krovich/BOP)
