Night Watch revealed the back story. There is a war going on all around us. The Light and Dark Others have waged war against one another for eons. In the period since mankind was brought into the struggle, a truce of sorts has been carved out. Our race has free will to determine which side we support. Agents have been trained by both sides in order to guarantee that such choices are made without manipulation or force.

Such a decision occurred in the climactic moments of Night Watch. Yegor, the child operative Anton had tried to curse out of existence, has spat on his father's beliefs, choosing life as a Dark Other. Given that everyone suspects him to be the prophesied key to the battle between the sides, this choice has had a profound impact upon Anton and his allies. They see the long struggle as a battle that is slipping away from them. Anton is driven to do something dramatic in order to turn the tide once again.

Enter the Chalk of Fate.

This mystical device allows its users to re-write their own personal choices. If Anton were to acquire and utilize this artifact, he could undo the decision he regrets the most. He could decide not to meet with the witch who cursed his girlfriend's fetus. With the Chalk of Fate, Anton could not only get a do over on fatherhood, he could swing the balance back in favor of The Light Others. The problem is that he is not the only one seeking out the device. The Dark Others have foreseen this possibility, and they see preventing it as one of the most imporant aspects in winning the near-eternal war.

The Sergey Lukyanenko trilogy is considered the Russian equivalent of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It has shattered box office records with both releases thus far. North American audiences largely overlooked Night Watch, but the title has already garnered a cult following. The second release is much anticipated by a small segment of the population, meaning it is capable of pulling off a box office surprise. (David Mumpower/BOP)
