This Australian coming-of-age film follows the trials and missteps of an adolescent girl trying to deal with the newfound joys and sorrows of pleasures of the flesh.

The film follows 16-year-old Heidi, who, like many a teen her age, mistakes physical urges for emotional attachment. Giving into her hormones and exploring the sexual side of life leads to a series of arguments with her mother, which culminate in Heidi running away from home to seek out a more pleasant and loving environment. She finds a place to belong, of sorts, in a mountain resort town, where she is made to feel welcome by the locals, particularly the male population. But as Heidi goes from partner to partner, never staying with one for long, she begins to recognize the emptiness of her encounters, and longs for a real connection. Enter neighboring farm boy Joe, another teen who is also learning the painful lesson that sex and love are not the same thing, and together he and Heidi learn how to build a relationship based on true intimacy instead of short-lived physical gratification.

Somersault debuted in its native land in 2004, and won a slew of awards for that year form the Australian Film Institute, among other awards in that country. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
