Inspired by R.E. Capps' novel Off East Magazine Street, writer/director Shainee Gabel worked to create a community of characters that The Hollywood Reporter says are "reminiscent of a Steinbeck novel".
John Travolta stars as Bobby Long, a debauched former professor of literature living in a run down home in New Orleans. He shares his living space with a smart but insecure young writer named Lawson (Gabriel Macht). The two men more or less subsist on a liquid diet - anything in the home that doesn't stink of rot is good enough to mix into a drink. Breakfast is as simple as beer and tomato juice.
It turns out, though, that the home has a third owner. Purslane Will (Scarlett Johansson) has been left one-third of the home after the death of her well-loved mother, singer Lorraine Will. Pursy, as she is known to her friends, discovers this fact when she shows up two days late for the funeral and for obdurate reasons all her own, decides to go ahead and move in.
It soon becomes clear to Pursy that there is much more to the relationship that exists between Bobby and Lawson than meets the eye, but her real reason for being there is to learn more about the mother who abandoned her but who everyone in New Orleans seems to adore. Soon, Pursy's presence has a positive effect on both men, and a sense of family begins to emerge. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
